Effective Communication for Leaders Under Pressure: 9:30-11:00am
Joan Beck, Eastern Kentucky University

Organized in coordination with the KY ACE Women's Network.

Strong leaders communicate clearly and consistently to inspire others. Our ability to communicate clearly is often hampered by our own internal responses to threats. Today, there are numerous threats to higher education. The ways we lead through these threats will determine whether we survive and what we will look like on the other side. In this workshop, we will give leaders the tools to cope with this environment. We will examine fears and threats, discuss response methods, examine communication styles, and practice highly charged conversations. Participants will find the strategies and tools from this workshop applicable in a variety of leadership scenarios.

Lunch: 11:00am-12:00pm

Assignment Design and Assessment: Intentional Integration for Significant Student Outcomes: 1:00-4:00pm (free session)
Cindy Judd & Ryan Baggett, Faculty Innovators, Eastern Kentucky University

This two-part workshop will provide an overview of assignment design and assessment by identifying resources and applying strategies to improve student understanding of course and instructor expectations. Specifically, part one will focus on “Creating Significant Learning Experiences” (as defined by Dr. L. Dee Fink), scaffolding, and assessment rubrics. In part two, participants will examine assignments using an evaluation matrix based on the written communications VALUE rubric. Participants are asked to bring: 1) an assignment they wish to refine or update that requires the student to demonstrate written communication and 2) the course student learning outcomes (SLOs).

Register for the afternoon pre-conference workshop!
