You Aren't Alone: Identifying and De-stigmatizing Faculty Burnout

Faculty burnout was a significant problem in higher education before COVID-19 arrived on the scene, but given the stress and uncertainty brought about by the pandemic, burnout among faculty, staff, and even students, is an epidemic of its own. In this workshop, we'll explore the facets and features of burnout in its clinical sense, discuss ways to talk about it with colleagues and administration, and consider strategies for coping with burnout yourself and with your colleagues.

Rebecca Pope-Ruark, PhD earned her doctorate in Rhetoric and Professional Communication from Iowa State University and spent 12 years as a tenure track/tenured faculty member before moving into her current role as a faculty teaching and learning specialist in the Center for Teaching at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on collaboration, faculty goal and project management using the Scrum framework, and faculty burnout. She is the author of Agile Faculty: Practical Strategies for Managing Research, Service, and Teaching (Chicago, 2017) and co-editor of the collection Redesigning Liberal Education: Innovative Design for a Twenty-First Century Undergraduate Education (Johns Hopkins, 2020). Her current book project for Johns Hopkins explores burnout among high-achieving women faculty. She lives in Atlanta, GA.
