TLI Spring 2019 Registration - Asking the Right Questions to Develop Critical Readers

Many instructors acknowledge the value of asking students questions to prompt discussion or deepen understanding, yet many of us lack confidence or experience in creating truly effective questions for our students. After briefly reviewing research on the efficacy of metacognitive questions in college classrooms, participants will learn ways to develop pedagogy-enhancing questions for their students and will consider how we ask questions differently in different fields. Additionally, this workshop will cover strategies for explicitly modeling question-asking for students in ways that will help them engage in cognitive monitoring, an important practice for sophisticated critical readers.
